Villiers can’t hide Britain’s responsibility to victims behind Stormont House Agreement

25 September, 2015 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin victim spokesperson Chris Hazzard has said that the British Secretary of State Theresa Villiers cannot abdicate the responsibility of the British state to victims by hiding being the Stormont House Agreement.

 Mr Hazzard said,

“The statement from British Secretary of State Theresa Villiers that the British Government will only legislate for new mechanisms to deal with the legacy of the conflict after a political resolution is found at Stormont is not good enough.

“It's was the British Government who were signatories to the European Convention of Human Rights not the devolved institutions, so Britain has clear statutory obligations to fulfil for victims and families and they need to stop hiding behind the Stormont House Agreement..

“The attitude of the Theresa Villiers brings into question UK impartiality and independence in fulfilling obligations in dealing with the legacy of the conflict.

"The mechanisms to deal with the legacy of the conflict need to be implemented independently as victims rights cannot be seen as matters to be traded for political leverage."
