Ruane says anti-refugee rally shameful
Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has said that an anti-refugee rally organised for today (Sunday) was shameful and does not represent the wishes of the vast majority of Irish people.
Ms. Ruane said:
“I find it incomprehensible given the history of this island and the millions of our citizens who sought refuge in foreign lands that any group of people could contemplate organising an anti-refugee rally.
“The fact it is to take place just 24 hours after dignitaries from over 30 nations participated in a commemoration in Newry of the Famine/Great Hunger makes it even more unbelievable.
“The famine claimed the lives of so many and forced even more from all religions and none to seek shelter and security in all corners of the earth.
"At the moment there is a huge humanitarian crisis on our doorstep as a result of men, women and children fleeing wars triggered by the West in the Middle East.
"We have a responsibility to help those suffering as a result of those wars.
“I appeal to the organisers even at this late stage to call off this demonstration of intolerance.
"However, if it goes ahead then I would call on people to send a strong message to them that they do not represent the vast majority of Irish people.
“It is particularly important that unionist politicians make it abundantly clear that it does not represent the unionist community who it is claimed the demonstration is being organised on behalf of.”
