The Irish Diaspora have a key role to play in the Commemorations of the 1916 Rising and the ongoing dialogue around peace and reconciliation on our island, according to Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking from Canada where he has been attending a number of events over the weekend, the Sinn Féin Diaspora spokesperson says:

“Irish emigrants are very much up to speed with what is happening in Ireland socially, economically and politically. They are very passionate about maintaining these links and having a positive input into Irish affairs.

“I have been speaking at events organised by Friends of Sinn Féin in Calgary and Vancouver outlining the plans for Sinn Féin’s programme of Commemorations in 2016 and we have discussed events that are being planned in Canada as well. We have been talking about the true meaning of Republicanism as the Leaders of 1916 would have seen it and how their vision still has to be realised in the Ireland of today.

“There are very strong links with Republicanism here in Canada. The Fenian Brotherhood led a number of unsuccessful raids on British Army forts in Canada between 1866 and 1871.

“Canadians have played a vital role in the Peace Process. Individuals such as General John De Chastelain, Justice Peter Corey, Justice William Hoyt and Professor Clifford Shearing were involved in different ways around the decommissioning process, the reorganisation of policing and the Bloody Sunday Inquiry.

“Canadians have also put their hands very deeply into their pockets to support peace and reconciliation by contributing significantly to the €895m that has been donated to the International Fund for Ireland since 1986 which has funded over 5,800 projects across the island of Ireland.

“They will be playing their role over the next year in building a vision for a New Republic for Ireland which builds on the vision of Republicans over the last two centuries, but which aims to be inclusive, peaceful and progressive from an economic and social perspective.

“The Irish Government needs to match their commitment by ensuring that they also get the recognition they deserve in relation to voting rights and representation in our democratic institutions.

“Many Irish emigrants will be coming home to take part in events across Ireland during 2016, but for those who are not in a position to do so, we need to give them the necessary supports to recognise their rights as Irish citizens and make them feel part of the Commemoration of the momentous events that happened a century ago. They are no more or less Irish than those who stayed at home.”

Ról tábhachtach ag an Diaspóra sna Comorthaí  – Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

Tá ról tábhachtach le n-imirt ag an Diaspóra sna Comórthaí ar Éirí Amach 1916 agus ins an díospóireacht leanúnach ó thaobh siochána agus athmhuintearas ar oileán s’againne, dar leis an Seanadóir, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt dó as Ceanada, áit a raibh sé ag freastal ar roinnt ócáidí thar an deireadh seachtaine, deir urlabhraí Diaspóra Shinn Féin:

“Tá na h-imircigh Éireannacha thar a bheith eolach faoi gach a bhfuil ag tarlú sa mbaile ó thaobh cúrsaí sóisialta, eacnamaíochta agus polaitíochta. Tá siad paiseanta maidir leis na naisc a choinneáil agus inchur dearfach a bheith acu i ngnóthaí na hÉireann.

“Tá me taréis labhairt ag ócáidí a d’eagraigh Cairde Sinn Féin i Calgary agus Vancouver, ag tabhairt léargais faoina bhfuil bhfuil beartaithe mar chuid de chlár Comorthaí 2016 Shinn Féin agus phléigh muid na h-imeachtaí atá in intinn acu eagrú anseo chomh maith. Labhair muid faoi céard is ciall le Poblachtánachas i ndáiríre agus an dualgas atá orainn ar fad fís laochra 1916 a fhíorú in Éireann an lae inniú.

“Tá ceangail láídir leis an bPoblachtánachas anseo i gCeanada. Rinne Bráithreachas na bhFiníní roinnt ruathair nar éirigh leo ar Dhúnta de chuid Airm na Breataine anseo i gCeanada idir 1866 agus 1871.

“Tá ról lárnach imeartha ag muintir Cheanada i bPróiséas na Síochána. Bhí daoine cosúil leis an nGinearál John De Chastelain, An Breitheamh Peter Corey, An Breitheamh William Hoyt agus an tOllamh Clifford Shearing bainteach go mór,ar bhealai éagsúla, maidir leis an bpróiséas díchoimisiúnaithe, an atheagar ar na fórsaí póilíneachta agus an fhiosrúchán maidir le h-eachtraí Dhomhnach na Fola.

“Chuir muintir Cheanada a lámha go domhan ina gcuid pócaí le tacú leis an tsíochán agus athmhuintearas chomh maith agus iad ag cur sciar suntasach ar fáil don €895m atá tugtha don Chiste Idirnáisiúnta d’Éireann, a bhfuil ós cionn 5,800 togra trasphobail maoinithe acu, ó 1986 i leith.

“Beidh ról acu sa bhliain seo teacht  freisin maidir le fís do Phoblacht Nua d’Éireann a thógáil, a bheidh bunaithe ar fhís na bPoblachtánach a chuaigh romhainn le dhá chéad bliain, ach a bheidh fréamhaithe sna prionsabil céanna don chothromaíocht, an tsíochan agus a bheidh forásach ó thaobh na h-eacnamaíochta agus cúrsaí sóisialta de.

“Caithfidh Rialtas na hÉireann an tiomántas sin ón Diaspóra a léiriú iad féin ó thaobh cinntiú go dtugtar an t-aitheantas cuí dóibh maidir le cearta vótála agus ionadaíocht ins na h-institiúid daonlathacha atá againn.

“Beidh cuid mhaith imircigh ag teacht abhaile le páirt a ghlacadh in imeachtaí ar fud na hÉireann i 2016, ach dóibh siúd nach bhfuil ábalta filleadh, caithfidh muid an tacaíocht cuí a thabhairt dóibh chun a gcuid cearta mar shaoránaithe Éireannacha a fháil agus iad a bheith rannpháirteach i gComóradh na n-eachtraí suntasacha a tharla, cothrom an ama seo céad bliain ó shoin.  Níl siad aon bhlas níos mó. ná níos lú mar Ghaeil, ná iad siúd a d’fhan ar an bfhód dúchais.”
