Financial Contribution scheme must be reinstated –Councillor Denise Mitchell
Speaking ahead of the Sinn Féin private members motion this week on Housing, Cllr Denise Mitchell and General election candidate for Dublin North Bay is calling on the government to support local authorities in reintroducing the Financial Contribution Scheme.
“I represent an area with a high number of senior citizens, many living in homes that have just become too big for them.
North Dublin has more people over the age of 65 living there than anywhere in the Country.
The financial contribution scheme is a very practical measure where senior’s citizens can downsize and we can bring much needed family homes back into the housing stock.
She further added,
‘I am calling on all TD’s from all parties to support Sinn Féin’s motion on Wednesday which has a number of workable and sensible measures to address the housing crisis.
The Financial contribution scheme is one of those. The number of allocations to the scheme has reduced by 83% over the last six years as Dublin City council scaled it down and then finally suspended it.
When the scheme was in operation it worked.
We need to think outside the box to solve the housing crisis and this measure is one that can help many families.’
