Farm crime unit needs reinforced not reduced

29 September, 2015 - by Bronwyn McGahan

Sinn Féin MLA Bronwyn McGahan has said that she is disappointed that a role within the agricultural crime unit has been discontinued.

 Ms. McGahan said,

“Due to the rising number of crimes against the farming community Sinn Féin argued for a dedicated crime unit within the PSNI to investigate these crimes.

“The unit which was small to begin with, has now lost a dedicated data analyst which is very worrying.

“In a question to the Justice Minister David Ford I have been told that the role has not been renewed due to budgetary constraints.

“The number of livestock and farming equipment that is being stolen has risen year on year and these crimes are

“It s unacceptable that crimes against farmers are being again lumped in with general crime in rural areas.

“Rather than remove the resource t we need more resources allocated to this unit as I believe that very few people if any have been arrested or convicted.

“I intend to raise this matter again with both the PSNI and the Justice Minister so that we begin to get to grip with crimes against the farming community.”
