37 homes lie vacant in Fingal- Louise O’Reilly

29 September, 2015

Sinn Féin general election candidate for Fingal Louise O’Reilly today criticised the three government TDs in Fingal for their failure to take meaningful steps to address the housing problem in the area.

With 1300 children in Dublin now homeless it is shocking to see that there are 37 vacant properties in Fingal.

O'Reilly said:

"It is hard to believe that in the past year there has been just under €1 million cut from the refurbishment budget while homelessness spirals out of control.

“There is a housing emergency in North County Dublin and the inaction of this government is nothing short of shameful.

“Local authorities need Minister Kelly to support them to tackle the deepening crisis of homelessness - the first step in this must be to refurbish the 37 existing vacant homes.

“Families are desperate and they need to be housed now - they cannot wait and this government need to take all necessary steps to house them.

“Only today another ESRI report has stated that rising rents have had a disproportionate impact on poorer households.

“That is why the Sinn Féin private member’s motion today calls for emergency legislation to cap and reduce rents to reasonable levels and to index link future rent rises.

“This government is talking about giving children iPads for school but children and families need homes not empty promises.

“It is hard to believe that 37 properties are lying idle while children are homeless in the constituency of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs'
