Government needs to follow through urgently on n28 Commitment - Cllr Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire
Cllr Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has stated that the Government must seek to deliver upon their commitment to fund the N28 upgrade, as soon as is possible.
Speaking today following the announcement of the Government's Capital Programme, the Sinn Féin General Election candidate, said that this road was of crucial strategic importance, and gave a cautious welcome to the news.
Councillor Ó Laoghaire said;
"This is a road of enormous importance, and more so since planning was given for the redevelopment of the Port of Cork. If the Port is to reach it's full potential, this roads needs to be delivered. I have been vocal on this issue for some time, having a motion passed calling for funding in June, as well as meeting with representatives of European Institutions such as the ECB and DG Move (EU Transport Department) urging the importance of this road. "
"However, and crucially, it is also central to the needs of the community. In particular the villages of Shanbally and Ringaskiddy, have already suffered the impact of heavy freight travelling through the middle of the villages for far too long. They deserve this road to be delivered."
"The Government and the NRA must now work with Cork County Council and the Local Community to ensure this is delivered as soon as possible, and also take account of Local Concerns regarding the proposed route."
Cllr Ó Laoghaire also expressed concerns at the Significant Role the Private Sector would have in financing the Capital Programme - "It appears as if PPPs will form a significant part of this programme. In the past this has proven poor value for money, in both Housing projects, and roads, and I have some concern whether it can be guaranteed that the Private Sector will deliver."
