Electoral Commission ruling allows for free and fair election - Gildernew
Sinn Féin’s Michelle Gildernew has welcomed the ruling from the Electoral Commission to back the decision by the Chief Electoral Officer to close a polling station in Moygashel.
Speaking today Ms Gildernew said:
“The original decision to close the polling station in Moygashel was the right one.
“While unionist politicians argued against this closure, their appeal has ultimately been rejected by the independent Electoral Commission.
“It is clear that the presence of a large number of loyalist flag protestors outside the polling station deterred many from exercising their democratic right.
“Their actions intimidated many people, from across all sections of our community, from using the polling station and exercising their democratic right to vote.
“It could not in any sense be deemed proper and correct to allow this to happen again during an election. Voting should be free from any type of harassment and especially the sectarian harassment and threats that occurred on that day."
