Planned Cyber bullying seminar welcomed

7 October, 2015 - by Bronwyn McGahan

Sinn Féin MLA Bronwyn McGahan has welcomed the decision by the Justice Committee to hold a seminar to deal with the issue of cyber crime including cyber bullying.

 Ms. McGahan said,

“The planned seminar at the W5 in the Odyssey Complex in Belfast which will be held on 15th October at 2pm is a welcome move in developing a strategy in dealing with cyber crime including bullying.

“We have seen over recent years how many young people have been victims of cyber bullying leading to tragic circumstances where some of these young people have taken their own lives.

“In the modern digital age the vast majority of our children have access to the internet in one way or another so it is important that children are educated on the dangers of being online and how to combat it.

“This seminar which will be open to schools will look at online protection for children, cyber-bullying and online reputation.

“It will also consider organised crime, identity theft, fraud and cyber-attacks on businesses and institutions and discuss ways of combatting these threats.

“I would appeal to anyone who is suffering from online bullying to seek help through their parents, their school, youth club or even the PSNI.”
