Kenny playing politics with issue of workers wages and social welfare - Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

9 October, 2015 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin Social Protection spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has said there is already a mechanism in place to ensure that people in work are paid more than they would on social welfare.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the Taoiseach Enda Kenny is playing politics with this issue.

Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said;

“The family income supplement is designed to ensure that those in low paid work are better off in work than on social welfare.

“The Taoiseach knows this yet he is playing politics with this issue.

“If the family income supplement is not working then he should simply increase it or extend the threshold for qualification.

“The Taoiseach presided over a government which took thousands out of pockets of workers through the USC, the Property Tax and Water Charges.

“If he genuinely wants to help workers then he should abolish water charges and the property tax and make low paid workers exempt from the USC as Sinn Féin has shown can be done in our budget alternative launched yesterday.”
