Growth of foodbanks a damning indictment of Tory austerity - McKenna

12 October, 2015 - by Paul Duffy

Sinn Féin councillor Gemma McKenna has said the growth of foodbanks is a damning indictment of the impact of the Tory government's austerity agenda.

Speaking after leading a Sinn Féin delegation to meet volunteers at Craigavon food bank, councillor McKenna said;

"The food bank has been in operation for two and a half years and is getting busier due to the harsh circumstances people find themselves in.

"Those who are doing this work at Craigavon Food Bank should be praised enormously for their efforts, but it cannot be ignored that the austerity policies of the Tory Government will continue to lead people in to poverty.

"In the year April 2013 to March 2014 the food bank was used 2,432 times and for the same period this year it was used 3,682 times.

"This is a growing problem the Tory government continues to ignore. The continuation of the Tory austerity agenda would lead to organisations like the food bank being overrun.

"We need to have a united voice from all political parties and wider civic society opposing Tory austerity policies."
