There should be no barriers to participation in sport - McMullan

12 October, 2015 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said there should be no barriers for people with disabilities participating in sport.

Mr McMullan said;

"I met with representatives of Sport NI to discuss the involvement of people with disabilities and special needs in sport.

"It was a positive meeting and I outlined the importance of involvement in sport for everyone in society, including people with disabilities.

"Sport NI agreed the new council structures will have a lead role in providing increased access to sport for people with disabilities and that measures to improve accessibility will be integrated into sports development plans.

"These plans will also include specialist training for coaches and equipment to allow as many people as possible to participate in sport, regardless of their abilities.

"There should be no barriers in place preventing people with disabilities participating in sport."
