All schools must meet need for Relationship & Sexuality Education Policy - Hazzard
Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Chris Hazzard has called on the Department for Education to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to schools which fail to implement a fit-for-purpose policy for Relationships & Sexuality Education (RSE).
Speaking at the Education Committee today, Mr Hazzard said:
"I welcome the focus that the Department have placed on RSE in recent years. Increasingly this is becoming a major issue in regards to pupils' health and wellbeing yet all too often our schools remain incorrigible in the face of an ever changing world.
"It was disappointing that in a previous evaluation of RSE only 48% of post-primary schools engaged in the survey; 20% of which admitted they do not have an appropriate RSE policy.
"It is vital that all schools adopt an appropriate RSE policy as a matter of urgency and I have now asked the Department to re-engage with all schools to ensure this is realised.
Mr Hazzard added:
"Bearing in mind that we are dealing with the health and well-being of our young people we need to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to those schools who refuse to cooperate in such an important matter."
