Ireland needs more advocates and champions like Lydia Foy - Boylan
Speaking after the ceremony, Ms Boylan said,
"It was an absolute honour to present Lydia with her award tonight and to recognise the campaign she has championed in the last 22 years regarding gender recognition in Ireland.
"Without Lydia there would be no Gender Recognition Act. And without her elongated and agonizing struggle, another generation of transgender citizens would have to withstand the hardship, fear and discrimination that Lydia’s generation experienced.
"In the past, it was no secret that Ireland had the most regressive Trans law in Europe but thanks to Lydia and her campaign, coupled with the marriage equality referendum earlier this year, it is now amongst one of the most progressive."Although Ireland has come a long way, we need more advocates and champions like Lydia, especially members of the young transgender community, to bring us further and to ensure that all people are recognised and respected as equal citizens in this country.” ENDS
