Number of homeless children up by over 100% -Cllr. Daithí Doolan

19 October, 2015 - by Daithí Doolan

According to the most recent information the number of children who are homeless in the Dublin region has increased by over 100% in 12 months.

Responding to the latest figures, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, chair of the Dublin City Council housing committee, said:

‘These figures from the Dublin Region Homeless Executive are shocking. They are a damming indictment of the government’s failed housing policies. These latest statistics cut through Minister Kelly’s spin. The housing crisis in Dublin is getting worse by the day and this evidence proves it. No amount of spin will change that.

‘In September of 2014 there were 668 children homeless in Dublin, a year on there are now 1,343 homeless children. There is now a total of 3,673 people, adults and children, homeless in Dublin. This is up from 3,095 in June of this year. This is nothing short of disgraceful. The government are spinning their way through a deepening crisis.

‘Sinn Féin want to work in partnership with others to find solutions. The blame game does not house anyone. We need solutions and we need them now. We have proposed that the government release the promised funding to build social housing in Dublin. It is only a social housing building programme that will provide the long term solution to the current homeless crisis. Each of these families is only a reflection of a deeper housing crisis.

‘The Minister promised to release funding for housing projects. I sincerely hope today’s figures encourage him to finally do that.’
