22 modular homes only a drop in the ocean - Cllr. Daithí Doolan
Today's government announcement of 22 modular homes, while welcome, is a drop in the ocean.
Responding to today’s announcement, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, chair of Dublin City Council's housing committee, said:
'Dublin is the centre of an unprecedented housing crisis. Minister Kelly's response to date has been to keep issuing statements and re-using old announcements.
'I welcome any relief for families stranded in hotels and B&Bs. But 22 modular homes is a band aid on an open wound.
'Many questions remain unanswered. Where will these homes go, how long can a family stay in one of these homes? How do we ensure this temporary solution does not become a permanent fixture? These questions need to be immediately addressed and I will be raising them at next week's council meeting.
'Modular housing must be seen as one part of an overall, long term strategy to tackle the housing crisis. What this city needs is a properly funded building programme of social housing. We have enough council land to deliver the housing needed. What we lack is government funding. The longer this is denied the deeper the crisis becomes.
