EPP attitude emblematic of state of European Union- Lynn Boylan MEP

22 October, 2015 - by Lynn Boylan MEP

Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has roundly criticised comments made at yesterday’s meeting in Madrid of the European People’s Party (EPP), the Fine Gael grouping in the European Parliament.

Ms Boylan said today:

"Comments made by the likes of EPP chairman Manfred Weber, a senior member of German chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party, laud Fine Gael for bringing Ireland back to economic growth.

What Manfred Weber fails to note is how Fine Gael have presided over a crisis that has seen families sleeping rough on the streets of Dublin, they have presided over chaos in our hospitals and they have shamelessly exported our youngest and brightest minds.

It is the very austerity policies championed by the EPP that has led to the rise of right wing extremism.  Scarcity of resources and difficulty in accessing public services that have been starved of investment has led to communities fighting each other.

EPP policies have systematically shifted the EU model of social solidarity to one of market driven profits. The continual support and promotion of the interests of huge corporations ahead of citizens and the opaque nature of doing business, leaves a lot to be desired.

Is it any wonder that there is growing disillusionment with the EU?  The austerity policies of EPP have undoubtedly contributed to the rise of the extreme right. "

Rather than trying to point the finger at everyone but themselves, I would suggest that the EPP take a cold hard look at the societal impacts of its policies. Also if they are really concerned with the rise of the extreme right, then they should look no further than within their own ranks and immediately disassociate themselves from its Hungarian bedfellows, the government led by the extreme right polices of Viktor Orban.
