Taoiseach must address Traveller exclusion – Ó Clochartaigh
Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the Taoiseach to seize the moment and address Traveller exclusion. Calling for a debate on the issue in the Seanad, Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“Now that the victims of the Carrickmines fire have been laid to rest, it is time once and for all for the Taoiseach to act
“As a government and a society, we can no longer turn a blind eye to the racism and exclusion foisted upon travellers.
“Anti-traveller prejudice and a deeply embedded institutional racism characterises everyday life for Irish travellers.
“The government has a political and societal responsibility to take the lead in actively tackling this issue.
“Existing structures are clearly not working and it is not good enough for the Taoiseach to bury his head in the sand.
“The state through its actions and inactions is actively involved in the production and reproduction of policies and structures that exclude travellers.
“I support the call by Pavee Point for a dedicated Traveller Agency to enforce a range of affirmative action policies to deal specifically with Traveller exclusion and discrimination.
“Racism and exclusion is blight on us all and the Taoiseach must show leadership when it comes to the inhumane and disgraceful treatment of the Travelling Community.”
