Historic day on Marriage Equality in the Seanad leaves north lagging behind - Ruane
Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed the final stage of legislation being passed on Marriage Equality in the Seanad today.
Speaking today Ms Ruane said:
“The passing of legislation in the Seanad today leaves the north of Ireland as the only place on these islands where we do not have the right of marriage equality.
“Marriage equality threatens no one and should be extended across Ireland.
"Sinn Féin has been to the fore in supporting marriage equality across Ireland and in Europe and voted for marriage equality each time it has come before the Assembly.
"We hope that all MLAs can support the motion that will be brought before the Assembly in the coming weeks, particularly those from parties who claim to support equal marriage.
"Marriage equality is a civil rights issue and it is long past the time that it was extended to citizens across Ireland."
