Bloodless Coup comments a clear attempt to absolve Government of Responsibility -Matt Carthy MEP

22 October, 2015 - by Matt Carthy MEP

Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West and member of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Matt Carthy, has strongly criticised remarks made by the Taoiseach at the annual European People’s Party Conference in Madrid today.

The Sinn Féin MEP said:

“It is reported that the Taoiseach said the Troika’s arrival was like a ‘bloodless coup’ and that the government was directed to make extremely difficult economic decisions.

“This is a clear attempt by the Taoiseach to distance himself from the political choices made by this government.

“Sinn Féin met with the Troika on a number of occasions and it is clear that the Troika were not wedded to any particular economic choices so long as the overall programme targets were met.

“The reality is that the economic choices made by this government – the choices to attack the most vulnerable, the introduction of water charges and the family home tax, the choice to pursue economic policies which increased income inequality- were not mandatory and alternatives were available.

“The reality is that this government lacked the vision and courage required to implement an alternative economic policy and simply chose to implement the policies established by Fianna Fáil, which protected the established elite at the expense of the majority of citizens.

“Sinn Féin consistently showed in alternative Budgets that it was possible to meet the targets set down in a fair and progressive way. Our proposals aimed to stimulate the economy and create jobs while protecting the most vulnerable through progressive and fair taxation.

“Meanwhile, this Government has implemented yet another budget which disproportionately favours the better off in society. Social Justice Ireland has stated that this Budget is the fifth regressive budget in a row implemented by this Government and the rich –poor divide has widened by another €506 per year.

“Today’s comments were a clear attempt by the Taoiseach to rewrite history and fool the Irish people as a General Election looms on the horizon.”
