Minister Kelly must stop dragging his feet on Ballymoneen Social Housing – Ó Clochartaigh

22 October, 2015

Commenting today after Galway City Council confirmed that it is finalising tender documents for phase 1 of the Ballymoneen Road Housing Development, Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has said that there is now urgent need for approval from the Department of Environment to allow the tender cover the whole scheme of 69 houses.

The Galway West – South Mayo  Senator said:

“I would like to commend my party colleagues on Galway City Council for their work on this issue to date.

“The Ballymoneen Road Housing Development is a proposed scheme for the construction of 69 social houses. It is anticipated that the tender for 14 of the units will be finalised within the next ten days with a contract to be signed in early 2016.

“While I welcome the fact that the phase 1 is advancing, I am hugely frustrated that delays within the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government have meant that the full scheme may not proceed at this stage.

“Since January 2015, Galway City Council have been awaiting an official response from the Department on its request for approval to advance the entire scheme and despite repeated efforts from the Local Authority, there has been no response to date.

“Effectively, this means that there could result in two separate tender contracts, placing extra costs on an already over stretched City Council.

“It is completely outrageous for the Department to fail to respond to Galway City Council on such an issue given the magnitude of the Housing crisis facing this city.

“It is estimated that an average of 12 new cases of homelessness are presenting to the local authority on a weekly basis and we need urgent action not complacency from the Minister.

“I have written to the Minister calling on him to respond immediately to the request of Galway City Council to allow this project go ahead in a timely and efficient manner.”

Caithfidh an tAire Kelly stopadh de tharraingt na gcos maidir le tithe Sóisialta Bhaile an Mhóinín – Ó Clochartaigh

Ag labhairt dó inniu i ndiaidh do Chomhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe deimhniú go bhfuil siad ag cur bailchríoch ar na doiciméid tairisceana do phás 1 d’fhorbairt tithíochta ar Bhóthar Baile an Mhóinín, deir an Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh ó Shinn Féin go bhfuil sé práinneach anois cead a fháil ón Roinn Comhshaoil an scéim iomlán de 69 teach a chur faoi aon tairiscint amháin.

Deir Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas:

“Ba mhaith liom mo chomhleacaithe ó Shinn Féin ar Chomhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe a mholadh as ucht a gcuid oibre ar an gceist seo go dáta.

“Tá forbairt, a bhfuil 69 teach sóisialta i gceist ann, beartaithe ar Bhóthar Baile an Mhóinín . Táthar ag súil go mbeidh an doiciméid tairisceana don chéad 14 aonad ullamh lastigh de dheich lá agus go síneofar an chonradh go luath i 2016.

“Cé go bhfáiltím roimh an scéala go bhfuiltear ag tosú ar phás 1, is ábhar mór frustrachas é go bhfuil moilleadóireacht taobh istigh don Roinn Comhshaoil, Pobail & Rialtais Áitiúil ag cur bac ar dhul chun cinn leis an scéim ina iomláine ag an bpoinnte seo.

“Ó mhi Eanáir 2015 tá Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe ag fanacht le scéala oifigiúil ón Roinn ar an iarratas chun an scéim iomlán a chur chun cinn agus in ainneoin iarrachtaí leanúnacaha ón gComhairle níl tada cloiste ar ais acu go fóill.

“Ciallaíonn seo go praiticiúil go bhféadfadh sé go mbeadh gá le dhá chonradh tairisceana, ag cur costas breise ar Chomhairle atá ar an ngannchuid cheana féin.

“Tá sé iomlán dochreidte go bhfuil teipthe ar an Roinn teacht ar ais chuig Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe ar an ábhar seo, i gcomhthéacs an ghéarchéim tithíochta atá sa gcathair i láthair na h-uaire.

“Meastar go bhfuil ar an meán 12 cás nua de dhaoine gan dídean ag teacht chuig an údarás áitiúil gach seachtain agus teastaíonn aicsean phráinneach anois uainn seachas plámás ón Aire.

“Tá scríofa agam chuig an Aireag iarraidh air gníomhú láíthreach ar iarratas Chomhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe chun cead a thabhairt an togra seo ina iomláine a chur chun cinn láithreach”.
