Fishing sector has to unite to protect industry - Martin Ferris TD
Speaking today at ‘A Fair Recovery for Irish Fishermen’ conference in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, Sinn Fein spokesman on Agriculture and the Marine, Martin Ferris TD, told a gathering of fishermen and producers' organisations that the sector has to unite in the common cause of protection of the fishing industry and its related sectors within coastal communities.
Deputy Ferris said;
"It is no secret that government does not think of fishing as a strong sector that has to be reckoned with. This sector needs to organise, to create the powerful lobby that it needs so that its voice will be heard.
"There are basic issues on which we can all agree, basic rights for fishermen, social welfare provisions like in other sectors, safety at sea and above all protection of stocks on which we all sing off the same hymn sheet. There is a myth out there that fishermen are overfishing and exhausting stocks. How could that be true when we are the ones who have the most to lose when stocks are reduced?”
He was joined on the platform by Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ní Riada and a panel of speakers including Eibhlín O'Sullivan, CEO of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation and Dr Magnus Johnson a marine biologist from the University of Hull.
