Unifying fishing industry is key to progress - Liadh Ní Riada MEP
Upon giving the closing address at the international fisheries conference in Waterford on a Fair Recovery for Irish Fishermen, Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada said;
“Establishing common ground is essential to the survival of the fishing industry
“It is the stakeholder's livelihoods that are in jeopardy and therefore it is vital that they are at the centre of the decision making process.
“The conference highlighted a number of pressing issues that are threatening and fragmenting the industry.
“There is no doubt that the new landing obligation, the criminalisation of fishermen, and the current system of quota allocations are the common ground issues that affects everyone equally and those facts should be the starting point of reaching consensus on creating a united lobbying force.
“We have an amazing natural resource with significant untapped potential and we need look at news and creating a new vision of what sustainable fisheries entails.”
