Delay to Tax Credits cuts welcomed - McCann

27 October, 2015 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann welcomed last night’s decision to delay cuts to Tax Credits for working families.

Speaking after the British House of Lords voted to delay cuts to Tax Credits Ms. McCann said,

"Tory cuts to Tax Credits would have a devastating impact on low income working families here.

“Up to 120,000 families would be directly effected some losing up to £1,000 per year to their incomes.

“We already have high levels of child and family poverty here and had these cuts went ahead as planned, families would have been pushed further into poverty and deprivation.

“There has been a consistent and relentless attack by the Tory’s on the poor, vulnerable and the most disadvantaged in society.

“What is needed is policies that protect the incomes of working families, and protect the most vulnerable in society.

“It’s through growing the economy, creating jobs and protecting public services that will make society more prosperous, not by attacking the poor and marginalised."
