Israel must end attacks on school pupils - Hazzard
Sinn Féin education spokesperson Chris Hazzard MLA has called on the Israeli government to end attacks on Palestinian schoolchildren immediately.
Speaking following a meeting with the Palestinian Education Minister in the West Bank, Mr Hazzard said:
"I was delighted to meet with Dr Sabri Saidam today in Ramallah and took the opportunity to extend solidarity with the minister and his department as they continue to deliver a world-class education system despite Israeli occupation.
"In recent months more than 1,100 Palestinian pupils have been injured by Israeli soldiers as tensions continue to rise in the region.
"Dr Saidam and his department are doing everything in their control to secure the safety of pupils and staff and have therefore signed up to the UN Safe Schools Declaration.
"It is immensely worrying that due to draconian military interests the Israeli government has refused to follow their Palestinian counterparts in cherishing the safety of the school environment.
"Israel must now sign up to this UN declaration as a matter of urgency if we are to ensure the safety of Palestinian pupils in future."
