Adams raises Cois na Mara housing development with Minister

28 October, 2015 - by Gerry Adams TD

Louth and East Meath Sinn Féin TD Gerry Adams has written to Environment Minister Alan Kelly to raise concerns about the proposed development of 370 houses at Cois na Mara, Bettystown.

Teachta Adams said,

“This issue is of great concern to current residents of Northlands and Brabazon Bay who have had to deal with numerous flooding incidents over recent years.  Residents are worried that any further development in the vicinity will exacerbate the problem.  I share these concerns.

“I have written to Minister Kelly seeking his intervention on this issue.  Legislation exists which enables the Minister to intervene in county development plans and local area plans and, if necessary, amend previous planning decisions.

“Planning permission for this huge development was first granted in 2008 during a time when many dubious planning decisions were made.  In my view the proposed site is unsuitable for large scale development and should this building go ahead many more residents face the prospect of being affected by flood water.

“Northlands in Bettystown and other parts of East Meath have been included as part of the OPW's Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) studies since 2011.

“I am aware that the OPW has undertaken to carry out flood risk assessments and to draft flood maps and a flood risk management plan. This is still a work in progress and I have suggested to the Minister that at the very least it would be sensible to halt any further construction at least until this work has been carried out.

“Sinn Féin Cllrs Imelda Munster and Eimear Ferguson have been liaising with local residents and an emergency motion requesting Ministerial intervention was successfully brought beforeLaytown/Bettystown Municipal District  by Cllr Ferguson last week, such is the level of concern locally. The letter will now go from the County Council.

“I hope that Minister Kelly re-examines this issue and I look forward to hearing his thoughts on the matter.”
