New Bank of Ireland changes will impact older people – Cllr Carney Boud
Sinn Féin Councillor Cathleen Carney Boud has expressed concern regarding plans by Bank of Ireland to limit the minimum amount of cash customers may withdraw in bank branches citing the potential impact on older people.
Speaking today Cllr Carney Boud said:
“Bank of Ireland is to introduce a number of changes in most branches from mid-November, including restricting in-branch cash withdrawals under €700. Anything under this amount will have to be done through ATM machines which will impact older customers not familiar with new technology.
"Bank of Ireland must address the needs of older customers, some of whom may not have used an ATM before. The unavailability of banking staff may result in older people entrusting their bank details to some else who can do the transaction for them. Unfortunately this leaves older people open to fraud and manipulation.
"I am concerned that other banks will follow suit with these measures, and urge them to consider the needs of older customers.”
