Sinn Féin in Government will empower rural communities – Trevor Ó Clochartaigh
Speaking today from the Farming in Peripheral Areas Conference in Milford, Co Donegal, Galway West South Mayo based Senator and Sinn Féin spokesperson on Rural Affairs, Diaspora and the Gaeltacht Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has stated that it is time to reverse the trend of rural disadvantage and empower rural communities.
The Senator said:
“I would like to commend my colleague Matt Carthy MEP, who has been to the forefront in representing the needs of rural Ireland and small farmers in Europe, for hosting this conference today.
“At today’s conference, we heard of the sterling work that has been undertaken by Sinn Féin’s Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in the North, Michelle O’Neill, in order to protect rural communities.
“In the North, Sinn Féin has ensured that rural communities have been protected. Minister Michelle O’Neill delivered a record £623 million into the Rural Development Fund, creating thousands of jobs in agriculture and rural areas.
“The Minister also intends to legislate in order to ensure that all policy initiatives are rural proofed through the introduction of the Rural Needs Bill next week.
“This contrasts markedly with the approach of the current Government in the South, whose cutbacks in Farm Assist, REPS and Leader have placed the future of small family farms at risk.
“Sinn Féin in Government will empower rural communities and start the process of reversing years of neglect of rural Ireland. Rural Ireland and Small Farmers will be Better Off with Sinn Féin.”
