Gary Doherty selected as third Sinn Féin candidate in Donegal

8 November, 2015 - by Gary Doherty

Sinn Féin Councillor Gary Doherty has today (Sunday) been officially approved as Sinn Féin’s third candidate to contest next year’s general election for Donegal after being officially endorsed by party members at Sinn Féin Convention this afternoon.

Cllr Doherty, who was the sole candidate to contest the convention in The Villa Rose Hotel, Ballybofey this afternoon, will now be added to the party ticket along with Deputies Pádraig MacLochlainn and Pearse Doherty.

The Stranorlar Electoral Area Councillor was nominated by former Sinn Féin Councillor Cora Harvey with party colleague Cllr Liam Doherty seconding the nomination.

Speaking during his speech at the convention Cllr Gary Doherty said:

“I am extremely humbled and thankful to have been chosen by you, the Donegal Sinn Féin members, to contest the forthcoming general election alongside Pearse Doherty and Pádraig MacLochlainn.

“Today is a momentous day in the history of our party in Donegal, and indeed, nationwide. We have taken the democratic decision to run three candidates in a five seater constituency – that is a bold and brave step by any standard.

“For Donegal to return three Sinn Féin TDs would present a seismic shift in the political demographic of this county: it would be one of the stories of this election.

“And comrades, I have absolutely no doubt that come next spring, Donegal will be known as The Sinn Féin County.

“The appetite for a Finn Valley TD among the electorate in the area is huge.  We have been represented to the highest degree by Pearse in Leinster House, but we need a TD of our own.  We have a huge Republican vote in this area, and there has been a huge groundswell of support for my candidacy from people I have met in the last few weeks.

“I do not underestimate the enormity of the challenge facing us as a party as we embark on this journey. Running three candidates in a five seater is an unprecedented move, but it is a necessary step if we are to build and grow into the party of government that we hope and expect will happen.

“Our party organisation in Donegal is the envy of every other political party. We are held up as the shining example of what can be achieved with good organisation, hard work and dedication by a committed group of activists and supporters.

“A chairde, it is time to end the hegemony of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael; it is time to elect a Finn Valley TD; it is time for three Sinn Féin TDs in Donegal and – above all – it is time for a Sinn Féin Government.”
