Political courage needed to meet EU budget challenges - Ní Riada
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada addresses the Budget committee ahead of the conciliation with Council and Commission on the EU Budget 2016
Speaking from Brussels today on the EU 2016 Budget, MEP Liadh Ní Riada stated,
"There are huge challenges ahead and we need the political courage and the political will to meet those challenges head on. The underfinancing of the EU Budget is at the heart of the problems which we are experiencing right across Europe.
"The so called 'unforeseen' priorities such as the handling of the refugee crisis and the dairy crisis, are in fact, not unforeseen; these crises are a logical outcome of decisions which have been taken at member state level and EU level.
"If we are serious about tackling unemployment creation, support for SME's, support for migrants and refugees, we need to have a realistic budget. The delays in reimbursing payment claims, the delays in implementing EU programs and the continuing deficit from the previous Multi Annual Financial framework of 2007-2014 is exacerbating an already fraught economic climate.
"We need to have the integrity and honesty to provide real support and resources where needed if we are to have any hope of climbing out of the mess which we are currently in. We need a revision of the MFF and look at providing a whole new and decent realistic budget which is equality proofed and which services growth, not more austerity measures which only causes more stagnation at the expense of those who have the least."
