Milne welcomes New Forestry Grant Schemes

10 November, 2015 - by Ian Milne

Sinn Féin Rural Development Spokesperson, Ian Milne MLA has welcomed the announcement by Agriculture Minister , Michelle O’Neill of up to £17.4million to support woodlands expansion and management of existing woodlands.

Mr Milne said:

“The Minister’s announcement of £17.4million for the Forest Expansion Scheme; the Forest Protection Scheme and Woodland Investment Grant is a welcome development for Rural communities.

“These three new schemes will greatly assist in creation of new woodlands and sustainable management of existing woodland and is a powerful example of a Sinn Féin Minister delivering a scheme on the ground which is both environmentally friendly and beneficial to landowners.

“Funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development this fund has the potential to greatly expand the availability of woodland areas that can be enjoyed by communities for outdoor pursuits as well as providing wildlife habitats which are regrettably being threatened by certain aspects of modern living and climate change.

“I would urge anyone who is eligible to apply for a grant to do so without delay. The new Forestry Grant Schemes are now open for funding applications under the Rural Development Programme for 2014-20.”
