McMullan calls on Commissioner Hogan to take action on dairy prices
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has called on European Commissioner Phil Hogan to take immediate action on increasing the intervention prices to help struggling dairy farmers.
Speaking ahead of a protest by dairy farmers in Belfast on Thursday, the Sinn Féin agriculture spokesperson said;
"Dairy farmers are continuing to receive unviable returns for their produce which are falling well below the average cost of production.
"This is having a severe impact on farm businesses with many farmers in despair about the sustainability of their farms.
"Over recent months, Sinn Féin has engaged extensively and stood shoulder to shoulder with the various farming groups. I'm deeply concerned about what the future may hold for the industry across Ireland.
"While Minister Michelle O'Neill has made strong representations to the European Commission securing the £5.1m targeted aid package from Brussels, only a raise in intervention prices can safely mend this volatile market.
"Commissioner Hogan needs to listen to the collective voice of Irish farmers and act immediately before milking parlours are forced to close their doors."
