Enterprise committee takes lead on challenging cuts to wind farms, the Minister must follow - Ó Muilleoir
Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has welcomed a cross-party decision by the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee today to seek an urgent meeting with the British Secretary of State at the Department of Energy and Climate Change in relation to its plans to stop support for small-scale wind energy providers.
Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said:
“It beggars belief that the Enterprise Minister Jonathan Bell should have accepted the ‘my way or the highway’ ultimatum from London.
“As a result, hundreds of jobs will be lost and hundreds of million of pounds in investment in small-scale wind turbine developments will now go elsewhere.
“The Tory attack on green energy has disproportionately hit the small developers and is wholly unacceptable.
“In June, Minister Bell pledged not to end subsidies for small-scale developers but the reality is he has now abandoned all small-scale developers.
“I call on the Minister to reject the threats from the Department of Energy and Climate Change in London and to push instead, with the committee, for an inclusive solution which protects small businesses and grows the green energy sector."
