Anderson praises role of older volunteers

12 November, 2015 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said it is essential that older people are encouraged to play a full role in society through volunteering.

Speaking ahead of an event at the North West Regional College to recognise volunteers, Ms Anderson said;

"It is clear we live in an ageing society and it is essential that people continue to play a full and meaningful role in the community.

"Not only is it good for the older people themselves, it is also of benefit for community development.

"That is why programmes such as the ValidVol programme are so important and I was hugely impressed at the innovative thinking around the programme at the North West Regional College.

"We witnessed the immense value of volunteering during the successful hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann and older people were key to that success by sharing their experience and knowledge.

"Further opportunities for people of all ages to volunteer will present themselves with Derry's bid for European Youth Capital status and as part of our response to the refugee crisis.

"Such volunteering opportunities allow for greater integration between older members of our community and young people."
