McMullan to meet EU officials in Brussels over labelling
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan will travel to Brussels next week to meet EU agriculture officials over meat labelling.
Mr McMullan said;
"Farmers across Ireland have been raising concerns about labelling of beef and lamb products.
"At the moment meat from animals which are reared in the south but finished in the north is labelled as 'mixed' origin.
"Given the reputation of Irish beef, lamb and pork across the world, producers and customers do not want the 'mixed' label.
"It is ridiculous this label would apply to an animal born in south Armagh and slaughtered just a few miles away in county Louth.
"While there are plans to move towards voluntary use of the 'Island of Ireland' label it is clear that a co-ordinated all-Ireland approach is needed to maximise the potential of the Irish agriculture industry.
"I will be travelling to Brussels next week as part of a Sinn Féin delegation led by Matt Carthy MEP to meet EU agriculture officials to discuss the concerns of Irish farmers and producers.
"Sinn Féin is committed to supporting and encouraging our agricultural sector to ensure it reaches its full potential."
