Ní Riada pledges support to World Pancreatic Cancer Day
Speaking after the meeting, Ms Ní Riada said,
"Last year, I did my part for WPCD by signing the Call for Action on Pancreatic Cancer, which kick-started the establishment of Pancreatic Cancer Europe.
"Therefore I was delighted to catch up with them this week. Over the last year, Pancreatic Cancer Europe has made significant strides to tackle Europe’s “forgotten cancer.”
"Despite Pancreatic Cancer being the fourth biggest cancer killer in the EU and the fifth biggest cancer killer in Ireland, less than 2% of money spent on Cancer research goes into Pancreatic Cancer.
"There has been no real improvement in survival rates in Pancreatic Cancer for 40years and with roughly 484 new cases diagnosed in Ireland each year, this is quite daunting.
"The early stages of this cancer do not usually produce symptoms, so the disease is generally advanced when it is diagnosed. Therefore awareness is key and as an elected representative I will endeavour to do all that I can to ensure it receives the support it requires." ENDS
