Muslim community deserves protection
Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has called on the Minister of Justice David Ford to ensure the protection of members of the Muslim community from attack and discrimination.
Ms. Ruane said,
“Given the latest attack on a member of the Muslim community and the veiled threat from the UPRG to hunt refugees out of Unionist areas it is important that we revise security for this community before we have a major tragedy on our hands.
“I took the opportunity today to raise the matter with the Minister of Justice David Ford and I also intend to raise it at the next meeting of the Policing Board.
‘The Muslim community, like the many other minority groups who have come to Ireland have assimilated into our communities and bring only diversity, culture and have added richness to our lives.
"Wherever injustice or oppression or racism or attacks take place on religious minorities or where anti-Semitism, or Islamophobia or sectarianism exists it must be confronted and they must be challenged.
“It is important that politicians and civic leaders including the Assembly and Executive lead by example on this issue.
“I am calling on people to support their neighbours and ensure they are safe from bullying or attack and report any hate crimes immediately to the police.”
