Over 400% increase in agency staff spend in Portincula Acute Hospital under this Government – Claire Kerrane
Sinn Féin General Election Candidate for the Roscommon Constituency has today hit out at the Government over the huge increase in spending on agency staff at Portincula hospital over the past five years.
The comments come as figures released by the HSE in response to a parliamentary question from Sinn Féin show that the spend on agency staff has almost doubled in the lifetime of this Government.
Ms Kerrane said:
“The figures released by the HSE show clearly that the recruitment embargo imposed on our front line public services by this Government has failed completely.
“Instead of reducing costs it has led to huge wage bills, chronic understaffing and reduced services for patients.
“In 2010 the amount spent on agency staff at the hospital was €857,000 – that has ballooned to almost €7million in 2014.
“Despite all the spin from this Government in relation to the easing of the recruitment embargo it appears that the spend for 2015 will match that of previous years as it stood at €4.5 million as of August this year.
“Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour have presided over the chronic mismanagement of our health service and it is the patients and front line workers who have paid the price. It simply cannot be allowed to continue.
“Sinn Féin has consistently shown how investment in our health service is possible – this year we allowed for an additional investment of €383 million to provide for the recruitment of front line staff including an additional 500 nurses, 250 consultants and 250 midwives.
“Instead this Government chose to allocate a measly €18 million which will barely scrape the surface in addressing the health needs of our citizens.”
