EU needs to revise safe countries list to help refugees - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called on the EU to revise its list of so-called safe and unsafe countries in order to help refugees.
Speaking after meeting refugees at Belfast City Mission, Ms Anderson said;
"I met today with refugees from Somalia, Nigeria, Congo and elsewhere to listen to their concerns about the current EU policy of labelling countries as safe and unsafe.
"They had serious concerns about how they are being treated by the British Home Office on how they processed asylum applications.
"The current policy of labelling some countries as safe and others as unsafe must be reviewed.
"At the moment, the British ambassador to Somalia is based in Kenya because of security concerns but yet Somalia is regarded as a safe country.
"Some refugees fleeing conflict and persecution have been in the asylum system for as long as 12 years at this stage.
"There is an urgent need for both the EU and the British government to review immigration policies, particularly around the labelling of countries."
