All-Ireland economy presents increased business opportunities – Ó Clochartaigh
Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has praised the energy and enthusiasm of the Diaspora, highlighting the potential benefits they can bring to the island of Ireland. However, Ó Clochartaigh reiterated the importance of true government recognition of the rights of our Diaspora, especially the right to vote.
Ó Clochartaigh said:
“Our Diaspora are a wonderful resource who harbour a lot of good will towards Ireland. The Global Economic Forum is a positive initiative. But it’s vital that concrete actions arise from this gathering. We must utilise the energy and potential of our Diaspora and activate growth throughout the island.
“The government for their part must recognise the rights of Irish citizens – and as such we must focus our questions on matters such as voting rights for Irish emigrants and the undocumented.
“It is interesting to note that business people here generally don’t see a border in the island of Ireland – they see the island as one country. They see 32 counties and the opportunities that our island presents.
“The benefits of an all-Ireland economy were further outlined in a major study published this which outlined how the reunification of Ireland would lead to significant growth north and south and create up to €35.6bn of GDP growth in 8 years.
“It is also imperative that we nurture our small to medium businesses, as well as focusing on the area of social entrepreneurship to enhance our economic development.
“I would hope that the government would take these suggestions on board, and prove their dedication to the Diaspora as well as recognising the many benefits of an all-Ireland economy.”
