Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has said the Irish Government must step up to the plate and live up its responsibilities to the Irish language.

He was speaking this morning at the Sinn Féin Slógadh taking place in Newry.

Deputy Adams said:

“The Government has made massive reductions in language funding in recent years. Given the chance to rectify the situation this year it failed. Yes, they did give an additional €1million to the 20 Year Irish Language Strategy, but at the same time they reduced the vital capital funding provided to Udarás na Gaeltachta by the same figure.”

“The Irish language and Irish speakers better. Irish deserves to be nurtured and developed as a vital component of our national cultural identity.”

“In our most recent budget submission, Sinn Féin proposed a range of measures totalling over €10million that would positively impact on the Irish language, including increasing Udarás na Gaeltachta’s capital fund by €5million, increasing funding for Irish language community schemes by €750,000 and introducing a tax credit for parents whose children attend Irish language courses.”

“In the North by contrast, the Líofa programme continues to go from strength-to-strength, with now over 15,000 participants, and Sinn Féin Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has overseen a range of other measures in order to improve engagement with the Irish language, including providing bursaries for children from low income families to attend Gaeltacht courses.”

“Carál has also recently published a Draft Acht na Gaeilge, which Sinn Féin remain firmly committed to, in spite of opposition from the main parties of Unionism.”

“What Sinn Féin in office have shown is the forward thinking and practical support required from the Government in Dublin so that the Irish language can prosper and reach its potential. They must step up to the plate and deliver on their responsibilities to the Irish language.”

“Dúirt Gerry Adams TD Uachtarán Shinn Féin go gcaithfidh Rialtas na hÉireann an beart a dhéanamh agus a ndualgais i leith na teanga a chomhlíonadh.

“Bhí sé ag labhairt ar maisdin ag Slógadh Shinn Féin atá ar siúl in Iúr Chinn Trá.

“Dúirt an Teachta Adams: "Tá ciorruithe móra curtha i bhfeidhm ag an rialtas seo ar chistiú don Ghaeilge le blianta beaga anuas. Is fíor gur thug siad milliún sa bhreis don Straitéis Fiche Bliain don Ghaeilge, ach ag an am céanna laghdaigh siad an deontas a thugtar d'Uadarás na Gaeltachta den mhéid céanna.

“Tá An Gheilge agus lucht labhartha na Gaeilge i dteideal tacaíochti bhfad níos fearr. Ba cheart go mbeadh an Ghaeilge á chothú agus á forbairt mar chuid lárnach dár bhféiniúlacht cultúrtha.

“Sna moltaí buiséid is déanaí uainne Chuir Sinn Féin beartas ar fiú e10 milliún iad chun tosaigh, ina measc sin - méadú 5 Mhilliún ar chiste caipitil Udarás na Gaeltachta, méadú e750 000 ar dheonú do scéimeanna pobail Gaeilge agus creidmheasanna cánach a thabhairt isteach do thuismitheoirí a bhfuil a bpáistí ag freastal ar chúrsaí Gaeilge.

“Sa Tuaisceart, mar mhalairt scéil, tá an scéim Líofa ag dul ó neart go neart, a bhfuil anois breis is 15 000 páirteach ann, agus tá beartais éagsúla curtha i gcrích ag an Aire Ní Chuilín chun teagmháil níos fearr le heagrais Ghaeilge a chruthú, lena n-áirítearcistíochta  chur ar fáil do pháistí ó theaghlaigh faoi mhíbhuntáiste freastal ar chúrsaí Gaeltachta.

“D'fhoilsigh Cáral le déanaí dréacht Acht na Gaeilge a bhfuil Sinn Féin tiomanta dá thabhairt isteach in aineoinn chur i gcoinne Pháirtithe móra na nAontachtóirí.

“Tá léirithe ag Sinn Féin i gcumhacht an cinéal tacaíochta agus dearcadh saolta atá de dhíth ón Ghaeilge ag Rialtas Bhaile Átha Cliath le gur féidir forbairt agus bláth teacht ar an Ghaeilge. Caithfidh siad an beart a dhéanamh agus a ndualgais i leith na Gaeilge a chomhlíonadh.”
