Staff Shortage in Beaumont Hospital critical to bed closures –Councillor Denise Mitchell

24 November, 2015 - by Denise Mitchell

Beaumont-Donaghmede councillor Denise Mitchell and General election candidate for Dublin Bay North has expressed concern at bed closures and staff shortages in Beaumont Hospital.

She said,

“It is well documented that there is severe overcrowding at the Emergency Department of Beaumont Hospital.  This is a time when patients are at their most vulnerable and there is a critical mismatch between the capacity to meet the needs patients and the demands on services.

There is currently a staff shortage of approximately 143 with 37 bed closures in Beaumont Hospital.

Some of these would be closed as a result of a refurbishment project and I welcome that these beds will be open in early December.

She further added,

“The number of patients waiting on beds in the Emergency department is increasing on an hourly basis, matching patients to re-opened beds is only a short term solution.

The real solution is hiring nurses and this will only be successful if adequate packages and fair working conditions are on offer.

The Minister for Health is very good at spin but very poor at direct action to solve the overcrowding crisis.

His inaction is putting patient’s lives at risk and taking away the dignity of those at their most vulnerable”
