Trident plans a vanity project for Tories - Hazzard

24 November, 2015 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has said British government plans to spend billions replacing Trident nuclear submarines are an insult to all those struggling in the face of Tory austerity.

Mr Hazzard said;

"The Tory government in London is planning to spend £167 billion on replacing Trident nuclear submarines. The Tory cabinet of millionaires is doing this at a time when they are committed to punishing the poorest in our society through austerity cuts.

"This is merely an expensive vanity project for David Cameron's Tory government.

"Renewal of Trident could potentially take billions out of the Executive's budget.

"The huge sums of money earmarked for Trident would be much better spent here in the north protecting the most vulnerable, investing in frontline public services and growing the economy.

"These plans to replace Trident, combined with other proposals for increasing military spending while cutting public services, shows the Tories’ complete disdain for the lives of ordinary people who are trying to make ends meet.

"It would serve no purpose for the people who are struggling as a result of the austerity policies of the British government."
