Sinn Féin welcomes progress on new TG4 transmitter for the north

12 January, 2005

Sinn Féin Arts, Leisure and Culture Spokesperson, East Derry MLA Francie Brolly has welcomed progress on plans to install a new transmitter for TG4 in Belfast to expand the coverage throughout the north.

Mr Brolly said:

"Making sure that TG4 is available right across the north is important in sustaining and promoting the Irish language.

"There has been widespread frustration both within the Irish language community and beyond that the commitment to promote the Irish language has been met with such internal resistance from within the NIO.

"Almost 170,000 people within the north have a knowledge of Irish and the promotion of the rights of Irish speakers is an important part of the Good Friday Agreement so it is vital that the momentum is maintained in order that we can deliver maximum progress in promoting the Irish language." ENDS
