Sinn Féin to use Private Members Time to move Rent Certainty and Prevention of Homelessness Bill 2015
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis is calling on all members of the Dáil to support the Rent Certainty and Prevention of Homelessness Bill 2015, which he will bring to second stage in the Dáil this week.
Speaking from Leinster House today Deputy Ellis said;
“Sinn Féin is bringing forward legislation this week at a time when we are in the midst of a major housing and homelessness crisis.
“The government’s response to this crisis has been lacklustre to say the least. Its failure to introduce rent certainty will actually see more people facing the prospect of homelessness.
“The bill which I am bringing forward this week would link rents to the rate of inflation and limit rent increases over a period of time. That is what hard pressed tenants at risk of homelessness require.
“The other purpose of the Sinn Féin Bill is to update the definition of homelessness and to put an onus on local authorities to act in support of people who are facing homelessness.
“Despite the government’s recent dismissal of rent certainty I am calling on them and all TDs to support this bill.
“If the Dáil passes this legislation then it will have finally done something positive and constructive to help fight the scourge of homelessness after years of passing measures that created the crisis in the first place.”
