Galway-Mayo TD’s should support SF bill for Rent Certainty – Senator Ó Clochartaigh

1 December, 2015

Galway West – South Mayo Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh is asking all local TD’s to put an end to rent uncertainty and support a  Sinn Féín Private Members Bill to prevent homelessness in the Dáil this week.

Speaking today he says:

‘It is not good enough for our local TD’s to offer tea and sympathy on the housing crisis - if they really want to do something about it they should start by putting aside party politics and supporting our Bill.

‘Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis is calling on all members of the Dáil to support the Rent Certainty and Prevention of Homelessness Bill 2015, which he will bring to second stage in the Dáil this week.

‘Sinn Féin is bringing forward this legislation at a time when we are in the midst of a major housing and homelessness crisis.

“The government’s response to this crisis has been lacklustre to say the least.  Its failure to introduce rent certainty will actually see more people facing the prospect of homelessness.

‘The bill which Sinn Féin am bringing forward this week would link rents to the rate of inflation and limit rent increases over a period of time.  That is what hard pressed tenants at risk of homelessness require.

‘The other purpose of the Bill is to update the definition of homelessness and to put an onus on local authorities to act in support of people who are facing homelessness.

‘Despite the government’s recent dismissal of rent certainty I am calling on them and all Galway and Mayo TDs in particular to support this bill.’

‘If the Dáil passes this legislation it will have finally done something positive and constructive to help fight the scourge of homelessness after years of passing measures that created the crisis in the first place.'
