Adams praises Pauline Tully’s courage

2 December, 2015 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has praised the courage of Pauline Tully and extended solidarity to her following today’s conviction of Pearse McAuley.

The Sinn Féin leader said:

“Pauline Tully was the victim of a vicious and violent assault. I want to extend my solidarity to her, to her two boys, and to her family who have all come through a terrifying and very difficult ordeal. Speaking after today’s court case, Pauline demonstrated great courage and dignity.

“Domestic violence is a serious problem in Irish society and a harrowing experience for its victims. According to Women’s Aid, one in five women have been abused by a current or former partner. Last year, there were 16,464 incidents of domestic violence reported to Women’s Aid, including 2,470 incidents of physical abuse. It also recorded 595 incidents of sexual abuse, including 176 rapes.

“More needs to be done to tackle violence against women, including integrated and properly resourced economic, social and cultural strategies.”
