Unique legislation needed to deal with public service exit payments - McKay
Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said the North needs unique legislation to deal with public service exit payments.
Mr McKay said;
"We opposed the legislative consent motion on the Enterprise Bill covering public sector exit payments because of the impact it would have on low-paid workers.
"These proposals would have had a particularly adverse impact on those on low pay. Workers with many years of service who are on low pay would be affected in the same way as high earners.
"Despite concerns raised by trade unions and others about the impact on the low paid, the department were unable to provide any assurances.
"There are elements of the bill which we support, particularly the introduction of a cap to prevent huge payouts to high earners.
"Ultimately, however, this is badly drafted legislation and is totally unsuitable for the north.
"There is a need for legislation in the North which does not inadvertently punish low-paid workers."
