Invest NI-IDA urged to usher in fresh start in cross-border co-operation

8 December, 2015 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has called for a new era of cross-border co-operation on economic development.

Speaking after a presentation by Invest NI to today’s Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Investment, ,Ms Fearon said

“As we move towards the harmonisation of corporation tax levels across the island, it’s crucial that the lead economic agencies seize this opportunity to work closely together to maximise economic benefits.

“Border areas in particular could see significant benefits if both jurisdictions and their economic agencies, including Enterprise Ireland, the IDA, Invest NI, and Intertrade Ireland set up formal structures to turbocharge and replicate initiatives such as the NorthWest Gateway and the Newry-Dundalk Memorandum of Understanding.

“Enterprise agencies which have been engines of economic progress in border areas should be given a special role in formulating the new strategies which will ensure that those communities benefit fully from changes in corporation tax rates.

“The Committee for Enterprise, Trade and Investment agreed to host a joint meeting with the Committee for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation in the South at which both the IDA and Invest NI will be invited to make presentations.”
