1100 people waiting for over one year for treatment at Sligo University Hospital – MacManus

10 December, 2015

South Donegal and Sligo based Sinn Féin General Election Candidate Chris MacManus today hit out at the Government after the latest hospital waiting list figures reveal that more than 1100 patients have been waiting for more than 1 year for treatment at Sligo University Hospital.

MacManus’ comments come in the wake of a Conference hosted by Sinn Féin in Sligo this week on the issue of the ongoing overcrowding in Hospitals across the state.

MacManus said:

“It is crystal clear that despite all the spin from this Government, hospital waiting lists remain at unacceptably high levels across the state.

“It is also crystal clear that, despite all the bravado from our Minister for Health, that he will fail to meet his very modest target of ensuring that no patient remains on hospital waiting lists for longer than 15 months by the end of this year.

“The figures released this week show that there are over 1100 people on the outpatient waiting list for Sligo Regional Hospital for over one year and of these 330 have been waiting for over 15 months.

“This Government is completely out of its depth and has obviously failed to tackle the growing crisis in our health system effectively.

“Nurses in Emergency Departments across the state are on the verge of strike action and it is little wonder as recent figures show that 7407 patients were treated on hospital trolleys across this state in the month of November alone.

“Instead of investing in our hospitals and providing weary frontline health workers with the means and resources to effectively address this crisis, our Government has fined hospitals across the state to the tune of €5.8 million. Many will view this as a cynical attempt to reduce waiting lists in the run up to an election.

“In our alternative budget, Sinn Féin provided for an additional investment of €383 million into the health system in order to provide for the recruitment of 500 additional nurses, 250 midwives and 250 hospital consultants.

“Sinn Féin has also pledged to recruit 2,500 additional nurses over a five year period if in Government with additional recruitment envisaged over a second period in office.

“Instead patients across this region have been forced to make do with empty promises and incompetence from Fine Gael and Labour.”
